LITERACY BOOT CAMP
26 – 28 March 2019,
Port Edward, Eastern Cape
At the same time as the inaugural MCC Boot Camp in Mathematics (Grade 2 and 3), we convened the inaugural Literacy Boot Camp for Grade R and 1 teachers. Again, dedicating three days of their holiday to improving their teaching literacy, 20 Grade R and Grade 1 teachers travelled to Port Edward for the first inaugural literacy boot camp.
The main goal of the camp was to reflect on early grade literacy teaching. We focused on the relationship between phonics and reading and writing for meaning. We had time to reflect on the literacy practice in our classrooms, to identify the areas where we can improve. We spent time demonstrating literacy activities to each other, and providing each other with feedback. We practiced shared reading, integrating phonics and writing, using songs for reading and writing, and free writing. Teachers developed their own teaching resources using their favourite rhymes and songs to take back to their classrooms. Each teacher began a journal to reflect on her practice. Teachers will use the journal to reflect on their practice during visits by NMI coaches to their classrooms.
Just like the math boot camp, days started early in the morning with a beach walk, and ended late into the evening with literacy games and songs.
